Coons Age

I know that the following conversation is essentially a reenactment of a Kevin Smith movie , but it did take place, on several occasions.

Me : I haven’t seen him in a coon’s age.
Michelle : I don’t think you should be saying that.
Me : Why?
Michelle : Isn’t that racist? Isn’t coon a racist term for a black person?
Me : Ya, but I don’t think it means that. I think it’s raccoon.
Michelle : Do raccoons live long?
Me : I don’t know.
Michelle : Well then that doesn’t make any sense.
Me : Well, do black people live long? That doesn’t make any more sense.
Michelle : It’s racist, it’s not supposed to make sense.

I like the expression. It trips nicely off the tongue. Is it racist? I finally looked up the origin of it so I know the answer, but should that really make a difference. The point is that I wasn’t intending to be derogatory to anyone. So even if I was going to hell it seems like I should be able to get off on a technicality.
