Many people do a job that they find unfulfilling. Years of this will lead anyone to begin to question themselves. Fear about your job builds as you begin to wonder if this is the best you can do. Is this as good as it gets?
Work that you do not enjoy and do well indicates an inadequacy in the job, not in you. Natural talent and ability combined with passion and enthusiasm creates everything worthwhile in the world. Everyone has talents and abilities, so finding work that uses yours is a worthwhile pursuit.
It’s not me. It’s you.
I came to a point in my life where I had developed enough confidence to believe that anyone that ended a personal relationship with me was losing out. I feel the same way about employers. I’m not right for everyone, but I’ll make one boss a very happy person.
Too many people feel their company is doing them a favor with each paycheck. No organization keeps employees to be charitable. You are employed because you have skills and expertise that are valued. Overcoming the fear of an unstable job situation begins with recognizing your own value.
Job Satisfaction
On a scale from one to ten how would your rate your current job satisfaction? Write the number down. I am beginning to believe that we have convinced ourselves that it is acceptable and expected that we will not find joy in work. That is why you did not write down a nine or a ten.
I don’t think we are impossible to please. If the workplace we yearn for is reasonable, then why is there a difference between what we want and what we have. Typically we close the gap by reducing our expectations but perhaps we should try a different approach.
Is this as good as it gets? I believe I should be able to write a different number on that piece of paper so I don’t think it is. I aim to find out.
In other news
In addition to penning the motivational and inspiring article above for The Project I also did the following this week:
- I began to write an honest resume. It is like a standard resume, but with 100% less bullshit. I’ll post it when I am done.
- I have finished all the exercises in the Parachute Experiment. The final sheet of paper needs some fussing and polishing before I will be happy with it. It will be posted here eventually too.
- Most of my volunteers for the Parachute Experiment have started the exercises in the book.
