Parachute Experiment

Last week I started doing the exercises in the job hunter’s book What Color Is Your Parachute? The goal is to produce “That One Piece Of Paper”. Workbook exercises, in a series of seven steps, distill your values, knowledge, skills, and desires down to something you can put on a single sheet of paper. That single sheet of paper functions as a roadmap that will help you find work that you find rewarding and enjoyable.

I have recruited at least 10 other people to do the exercises to provide a variety of viewpoints. I will be conducting interviews with my volunteers after they finish each step to find out how it went. The results will become a collective review of this process before The Project finishes.

If you are interested in joining this experiment, please email me.

Also this week

  • I started to compile a reading list for The Project. Suggestions are welcome.
  • I traveled by bus to Vancouver to see friends and to write.
  • I interviewed a local chef at a great restaurant. I am interested in food and the restaurant business and learning more about these things fits in with this journey of self-discovery. Secondly, I am thinking of writing about the local Victoria food scene.
  • I started work on a future post about overcoming the fear of quitting or being fired from a job.

I like the idea of writing about the Victoria food and restaurant scene. Besides the local paper review and a few local foodie blogs I have not been able to find a good local source for this. Plus, it’ll be a reason for you to go out and spend the money you’re not making!
