The Project Plan

I am splitting The Project up into different phases:

  1. Planning – What do I want?
  2. Research – What jobs give me what I want?
  3. Action – Getting your dream job
  4. Evolution – A job that works for me

There will be some overlap, but generally I will tackle them in order.

Step One – What do I want? (Planning)

Sitting down with paper and pen to think and reflect looks, and sometimes feels, very much like accomplishing nothing. It is invariably some of the most valuable time you will spend in any endeavor. A journey requires a destination. Creating a concrete and specific outline of what I want from a career is a prerequisite for everything that is to follow.

  • What are the things that are important to me?
  • What things am I good at?
  • What brings me joy?
  • What kind of people do I like to work with?

Not an exhaustive list of questions, but you get the idea. I need to begin by sculpting my wants and desires into something recognizable. I need to define what I want before I go out and look for it.

Step Two – What jobs give me what I want? (Research)

I should have a pretty good idea what my dream job looks like now. I need to put a name to the face. The objective here is to take the dream and turn it into a tangible objective.

Step Three – Getting your dream job. (Action)

Great, now I have a goal. The next logical step is to find out how to get from A to B. I will look into job hunting, networking, and negotiation in an attempt to achieve my objective.

Step Four – A job that works for me. (Evolution)

Doing work that fits with your life goals is an ongoing affair. We grow as time passes and our needs and desires change in response. I aim to discover an approach that will ensure my career evolves with me.
